Please support the Maritime Museum

Like many not-for-profits this year, 2020, the year of COVID, the Hudson River Maritime Museum is struggling to stay afloat.  Kingston is a relatively small town of 23,000 residents, give or take, so fundraising requires casting a wide net.  In the world of rowing the museum supports the Kingston High School Crew as well as the YouthBoat Project which teaches rowing on traditional rowboats.  In order to keep the museum up and running so that it can continue to provide these wonderful programs that instill needed skills such as discipline, leadership, camaraderie, humility,  and trust…  Please support the Hudson River Maritime Museum with a donation today.

Paddle to Cruger, Magdalen Islands

Great adventure with friends Margo and Bob yesterday, August 16, 2020.. We had 2 SUPs (Anezka and I), a canoe and a sleek kayak. We launched from Glasco Mini Park and headed towards Cruger Island (see map of Hudson section below). The mile or so across the Hudson was treacherous. We learned that the SUPs, although slow, did the job. The sleek kayak, of course, had the best performance (and, I must say, a great paddler!), and the canoe had the most trouble as it sits higher on the water and the wind was a very big problem, setting up a severe chop all the way across. After going under the amtrak bridge at Cruger we returned to the Hudson and headed up to Magdalen Island. A short stop on Magdalen and we were back across the Hudson again. Both Cruger and Magdalen are south of Saugerties and north of Kingson, NY.

Solo Row

An extreme low tide at 6am this morning. Humidity low, temperature about 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Sunrise has a very beautiful rarified color that is very pleasing. I notice it as I row into the creek on the north side of Island Dock. The rusty bridge seems to have been painted by the sun so very beautifully. I have to share a few photos. I especially like to laugh at the funny way selfies appear backwards. It was too windy on the Hudson so I turn around at the lighthouse and go back on the creek to Feeney’s and back. All in all it was another peaceful sunrise row. One thing though. All instruments I had that use GPS were not working. This is the second time this has happened this week. Not sure if recent storms have caused outages. But as long as I can make a phone call I will go out on the Hudson.
