About The Rondout Rower

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a Pisces, Nelsie Aybar-Grau not only enjoyed swimming in the Caribbean Sea but she has enjoyed travels that have brought her in close contact to the waters of the Thames, the Seine, the Yangtse, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Hudson and the Harlem Rivers. Although she enjoyed swimming she had never pursued athletics in any serious way. After a career in computer programming for Wall Street area financial institutions she moved into the Hudson Valley upstate New York area. Then at 60 years of age as a favor to a friend she started photographing the Rondout Creek and the rowers in the Rondout Rowing Club. After four years of rowing both on land and water she became president of the rowing club from 2014 to 2017. Rowing has changed her life. Living steps away from the Rondout Creek has brought her closer to nature and the meditative rejuvenation that it provides.

Sunday Solo row Sept 6 2020

As you can see the map shows a 7 mile plus row up the Hudson.  I note the moon is high in the West.  I hear a sound behind me and when I turn around  I see a tugboat pushing a barge south inside the  channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q9ft667sxo  .I love the sound it makes as it passes by.   I continue north along the shoreline  which will soon be well known as Quarry Waters  (see https://quarrywatersparkinfo.org/).  It is very quiet and beautiful.  I stop and pull my boat in for a break and take note of the very clear water (I can see my feet!).   On the way back I run into some SUPers who launched from Rhinecliff.  They picked a splendid day to paddle the river!   As I go back up the creek I see what looks like an eagle on the leafless, scraggly tree on the north bank of the creek.  I am henceforth call it “Eagles Perch Tree”.
