About The Rondout Rower

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a Pisces, Nelsie Aybar-Grau not only enjoyed swimming in the Caribbean Sea but she has enjoyed travels that have brought her in close contact to the waters of the Thames, the Seine, the Yangtse, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Hudson and the Harlem Rivers. Although she enjoyed swimming she had never pursued athletics in any serious way. After a career in computer programming for Wall Street area financial institutions she moved into the Hudson Valley upstate New York area. Then at 60 years of age as a favor to a friend she started photographing the Rondout Creek and the rowers in the Rondout Rowing Club. After four years of rowing both on land and water she became president of the rowing club from 2014 to 2017. Rowing has changed her life. Living steps away from the Rondout Creek has brought her closer to nature and the meditative rejuvenation that it provides.

THIS is a picture of my globe.   I have it in my living room. Canary Current 

What is cool about it is that it shows the currents on the oceans around the world.  You can see that the top righthand corner just under Spain there is a current that runs south and west over Northwest Africa (the Canary Current, to be exact).  On December 12th, 2021 one hundred and seven participants will row across the 3,000 miles it takes to go from the Grand Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean.  They will ride that current as best they can.  Of course, we all know that the wind will be a constant determinant as to how useful the current can be.  This annual race is called the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Campaign.  It is a DOOZY!  You can track it on the Talisker Whiskey website:  Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge – The World’s Toughest Row (taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com).  I will be keeping an eye on it myself.
