Alot of activity on the Hudson this morning

Very windy also

Thursday, January 2nd, 2025

Sunrise is at 7:24am . Has been for at least 4 days or more. Equinox or whatever that was, marked the shortest day of the year and now the days should be getting longer. Not seeing that yet.
Nevertheless its wonderment to watch the sunrise. Every single day is different. We had a lot of clouds with the sun trying desperately to make her presence felt.
The Hudson was choppy due to three boats making their way north. A tug, a flat boat with a HUGE crane on it being escorted towards the Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge.
Yesterday was a day of deep, thick, dense fog. In the distance you could hear a foghorn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipBYsWFkQxY) warning river traffic to beware. I suspect the foghorn is located at the Bridge. Didn’t see any boats on the water then. Whyu would youventure on a river if you could not see a thing for at least a mile.
That would not make any sense.
Anyway the river’s driftwood deliveries were bountifuyl.. Branches of all size and ages. Some that were mealy and not worth picking up but others had clearly been sitting on a shore somewhere for months, even years, and had dried so much that, miraculously, they took on a weight. They become almost petrified (heavier). Even though they do not get bigger, they weigh more. Curious thing that. Good for us, firewood that may burn very hot, I think. Whatever kind it might be. We found one that had gotten loose of a beaver’s home. Their sharp teeth had cut them down and, of course, they choose the best wood. Usually birch, as it becomes hard and lasts long. At least I think that is why he seems to prefer them (?). Thanks Mr. Beaver. That will warm our house for an hour or so.
