Having had the opportunity to row a dory recently I wanted to find out everything I could about the design of this boat. In doing so I found endless (yes, endless) pictures, beautiful and famous (The Fog Warning by Winslow Homer) . And then I stumbled on one of the most incredible stories about three Grand Canyon guides during the epic flooding of 1983. So it goes that the guides in a dory named “The Emerald Mile” took a highly risking ride to put up plywood flash boards in order to hold off the flood at Glen Canyon Dam while the Bureau of Reclamation considered their options to contain and control the Colorado River.
